Location planning guide
Chiang Mai repatriation planning guide
Use this Chiang Mai guide to identify the city, district and current facility, separate preliminary transfers from international travel, and check CNX connections. The starting point and complete service scope require case-specific confirmation.
WhatsApp our teamSpecify the city, district and present care location
A Chiang Mai enquiry may refer to the city, the wider province or a trip through northern Thailand. Give the present facility and district, together with the contact who can confirm where the person is held or receiving care. If a transfer into Chiang Mai has already occurred, use that current location and explain the earlier location only where it helps connect records or responsible contacts.
Airports of Thailand identifies Chiang Mai International Airport as CNX, in Mueang District, and describes it as a gateway to other northern provinces, including Mae Hong Son, Lamphun and Lampang. That regional role makes precise locations important. A “Chiang Mai” travel booking does not establish collection coverage in another province, nor does this page confirm a regional transport network.
Separate movement into the city from international travel
If the person is outside the city, identify whether the first decision is transfer to a Chiang Mai hospital, travel to an airport or something else. Ask the responsible professionals to explain the purpose and endpoint of that movement. Moving closer to an airport is not by itself a clinical reason to move a patient, and the family should not choose a care setting solely around an airline schedule.
Where a hospital transfer is proposed, establish receiving acceptance before treating the journey as arranged. Give the exact origin so the transport team can assess access rather than assuming that all enquiries begin within the city. The hospital transfer guide explains the information needed for a sending and receiving handover. Any later international journey remains a separate approval and coordination task.
Inspect every airport in a connecting itinerary
Use CNX for Chiang Mai and identify the code for every subsequent airport. If a connection through Bangkok is proposed, check whether it uses Suvarnabhumi, BKK, or Don Mueang, DMK, and whether the onward departure uses the same airport. A connection shown as “Bangkok” can conceal a separate ground transfer that must be assessed and included in the scope.
Ask the responsible providers to check the whole itinerary, including the operating airlines and any change of terminal or airport. Do not assume that a domestic feeder flight accepts the same medical support or cargo arrangement as the international leg. Our airport handover guide sets out useful questions about who remains responsible while a person moves between services.
Give the clinical team a complete patient plan
For a living patient, start with the treating clinician’s contact, proposed destination and receiving care arrangements. Ask who assesses the journey from the current bed, including any preliminary road movement, airport waiting and connections. Explain if the patient would be accompanied by a relative and whether the family’s own travel is still provisional. Companionship and an assigned medical escort are different arrangements.
Airlines may seek medical information before accepting travel, as the UK Civil Aviation Authority explains. Ask which operating airline needs to review the case and who submits the requested information. If the route changes from a CNX departure to another airport, have the professional plan reviewed rather than simply replacing the ticket. The medical repatriation overview connects these decisions with receiving acceptance and insurer coordination.
Trace records and release after a death
For a deceased person, record the place of death separately from the current holding location if they differ. Ask which authority is handling any outstanding investigation or release, and which contact holds the relevant records. A movement into Chiang Mai does not mean every earlier administrative task is complete. Avoid asking the family to infer authority from the address of the current facility.
Identify the family representative, the appointed funeral professional and the intended receiving funeral director. Consular advice is nationality-specific; British guidance for Thailand, for example, describes a Bangkok embassy release-letter process. Ask the relevant office how representation and document delivery work before relatives plan an administrative journey. The documentation guide helps separate originals, translations and outstanding requests from the physical transport plan.
Build the quote around all northern and onward stages
The written proposal should identify whether it begins in Chiang Mai city or elsewhere, and where it ends. Ask for a preliminary hospital movement, an airport stage and any onward transfer to be described individually where they are proposed. This makes it possible to see which services are actually included and who takes responsibility at the point between them.
If release or clinical review changes the plan, ask which bookings and permissions need reconfirmation. Give one agreed contact responsibility for distributing the latest itinerary to the family, insurer and relevant professionals. Our enquiry page explains the current contact route. No local office, northern-region collection coverage, aircraft access or hospital arrangement should be inferred from this planning page; the individual scope still requires confirmation.
Questions you may have
How should I describe a starting point outside Chiang Mai?
Name the exact province, district and facility, even if the family flew through CNX. A location in Mae Hong Son, Lamphun, Lampang or elsewhere needs its own access and collection assessment. Chiang Mai airport’s regional role does not establish a provider’s coverage beyond the city.
Is a Bangkok connection just one airport handover?
Check the actual itinerary. If the arrival and departure codes differ between BKK and DMK, a road stage is involved. Ask who assesses that stage and how responsibility, waiting and support connect with the flights; do not infer the arrangement from a booking summary.
Should relatives travel to collect documents immediately?
First ask the relevant authority or consular office what is required, who may act and how documents are obtained. Some tasks may involve an authorized representative. Confirm the case-specific process before making travel arrangements that depend on an assumed appointment or release date.
What if the patient’s condition needs urgent attention?
Call 1669 for a medical emergency in Thailand, or alert the treating team if the patient is already in care. Repatriation enquiries do not replace immediate assessment or emergency response.
