Location planning guide
Bangkok repatriation planning guide
Use this Bangkok guide to organize a patient or deceased repatriation enquiry, distinguish BKK from DMK, and clarify facility, document and airport handovers. Any service arrangement needs confirmation for the individual case.
WhatsApp our teamSeparate the facility from the airport
For a Bangkok repatriation enquiry, begin with the person’s actual location: the hospital and branch, ward contact, mortuary or other current care setting. Include the district and a contact who can identify the correct collection entrance. A hotel address or the place where an incident occurred may no longer be the starting point. State when the location was last confirmed, particularly if another hospital transfer is being discussed.
Airport names need equal care. Airports of Thailand identifies Suvarnabhumi Airport as BKK and Don Mueang International Airport as DMK. These are separate airports; Suvarnabhumi is in Samut Prakan. Write the full airport name and code in every proposed itinerary instead of using “Bangkok airport”. This prevents an administrative label from hiding an additional road journey.
Check whether a connection changes airports
If a family is considering flights through Bangkok, compare the arrival and departure airport codes before asking for a transfer quotation. A change between BKK and DMK introduces a separate ground stage, with its own handover and support requirements. The existence of public transport between the airports does not establish a suitable arrangement for a patient or a deceased person’s remains.
Ask the coordinating professionals to identify the complete sequence, including any terminal movement or intervening care setting. Keep an itinerary proposed by a relative separate from one accepted by the responsible airline and providers. If the airport changes after a quote is issued, request a revised scope. Our airport medical transfer guide explains the questions to ask about responsibility during this stage.
Plan a patient journey from the ward outward
For a living patient, identify the sending clinician and the proposed receiving hospital or home care contact. Ask who reviews the road transfer, airport waiting, flight and onward journey together. The treating team’s view of readiness to leave hospital should be communicated to those assessing transport; it should not be reduced to a relative saying that the patient has been discharged.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority explains that airlines may request medical information or further evidence before accepting travel. Ask the operating airline about its process for this particular itinerary. A flight sold under another airline’s name still needs the correct operating contact. If medical escort support is proposed, establish where the escort joins and how the ward handover connects with the airport arrangement.
Keep release and consular tasks visible
For a deceased case, record who currently holds the body and who will confirm release. Identify the family decision maker, any appointed funeral director and the destination country. The authority dealing with a death may be different from the hospital or facility currently holding the person. Ask what remains outstanding before collection can be discussed.
Bangkok is also relevant to consular administration. British guidance describes a release letter from the British Embassy Bangkok; other nationalities should obtain their own consular instructions. The presence of an embassy in the city does not settle release, transport or destination acceptance. Use the consular coordination guide to organize questions and determine whether a representative can handle a task before relatives travel across the city.
Describe the handover rather than naming a terminal
For an outbound patient, ask who remains responsible between leaving the ward and being accepted by the next team. For a body shipment, ask the appointed funeral and cargo professionals to identify the agreed acceptance location. Passenger check-in instructions should not be treated as directions for delivering human remains. These pathways require separate arrangements even when relatives travel on the same day.
For an arrival into Bangkok, give the actual receiving destination and contact. A flight landing at BKK or DMK does not establish acceptance by a hospital elsewhere in the metropolitan area. The written plan should show who receives the person, where the handover occurs and whom to contact if the flight or receiving arrangements change. Avoid collecting competing pickup instructions in separate family messages.
Make a quotation usable across the city
A useful quotation identifies the collection facility, proposed airport, endpoint and included services. Ask how waiting, a change of hospital branch or a switch between Bangkok’s airports would affect the arrangement. Clarify whether document collection, translation or another administrative visit is included, if any of these tasks is requested. A general description such as “Bangkok transfer” leaves too much unclear.
If an insurer is involved, give its case reference and ask which organization can authorize the proposed service. Keep provisional flight details clearly marked. Before confirming relatives’ travel, find out which decision still controls the plan: clinical review, release, receiving acceptance or transport approval. The contact page provides the current enquiry channel; exact Bangkok coverage and providers require a case-specific confirmation.
Questions you may have
What should a Bangkok collection proposal confirm?
Ask for written confirmation of the actual provider, collection facility, airport or receiving destination, and each handover. Check the responsibilities and conditions attached to that proposal. This planning guide does not confirm a Takecare office, hospital affiliation, airport access or collection arrangement in Bangkok.
Can a domestic connection be treated as part of the international flight?
Only after the itinerary and required support have been checked. Record every operating airline and airport code. If the flights use different Bangkok airports, ask who plans the road stage and the transfer of responsibility. Separate tickets or bookings should not be assumed to cover that coordination.
What information is useful in the first message?
Give the current facility and branch, whether the enquiry concerns a patient or deceased person, the intended destination and one family contact. Add an insurer reference if available. Ask how to provide sensitive records after the appropriate contact and information requirements have been established.
What if urgent medical help is needed now?
Call 1669 for a medical emergency in Thailand. Do not wait for a repatriation enquiry to arrange immediate treatment. The WhatsApp contact is for coordination discussions and is not an emergency dispatch or patient monitoring service.
